The ATA Carnet, is an international customs document that permits the VAT / Duty free temporary export and import of certain goods for up to twelve months. There are 78 countries and customs terriroties who are part of the ATA Guarantee Scheme.
The acronym ATA is a combination of French and English terms “Admission Temporaire / Temporary Admission”.
It consists of unified customs declaration forms which are prepared and ready to be completed by the local customs authorities at every border crossing point listed on the ATA Carnet.
It is a globally accepted guarantee for customs duties and taxes which can replace the security deposit required by each local customs authority at the import country.
It can be used in multiple countries in multiple trips up to its one-year validity.
The ATA carnet is now the document most widely used by the business community for international operations involving temporary admission of goods.
The ATA Carnet is jointly administered by the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) through its World Chambers Federation.
In Ireland you apply for an ATA Carnet via the Dublin Chamber of Commerce where you provide all required information to them and once a deposit / bank guarantee is in place to cover your goods, they will issue the ATA Carnet to you within their agreed lead times.
