Fumigation Certificate

A Fumigation Certificate is an official document confirming that a shipment—such as agricultural goods, wooden products, packaging materials, or other pest-risk commodities—has been properly fumigated to eliminate insects, pests, and other harmful organisms. The treatment must be carried out using an approved fumigant and in full compliance with the requirements of the importing country’s plant health and biosecurity authorities.

In Ireland, a Fumigation Certificate is commonly required for imports that pose a risk to agriculture, forestry, or the wider environment. It provides assurance that the goods have undergone a certified fumigation process at the correct concentration, exposure time, and temperature to meet EU and international phytosanitary standards.

The certificate is issued by a licensed and authorised fumigator, who performs the treatment and verifies compliance with all regulatory requirements. It typically includes:

  • The type of fumigant used
  • The date, time, and duration of fumigation
  • Details of the treatment conditions
  • The name, certification, and contact details of the fumigation provider
  • Any relevant importing-country-specific requirements

The primary purpose of a Fumigation Certificate is to prevent the introduction and spread of harmful pests and diseases, safeguarding Ireland’s agriculture, forestry sector, and natural environment.

Failure to provide a valid Fumigation Certificate can result in:

  • Delays at the port of entry
  • Additional inspections or re-fumigation
  • Refusal of entry for the shipment
  • Significant extra costs for importers

A compliant and accurate Fumigation Certificate ensures smooth customs clearance and helps importers meet international plant health obligations.
